Primary Learner Goals for General Education
In
March 2004, the General Education Advisory
Council
accepted the revised General
Education Course Area Designations - Criteria and
Goals document. This document describes the
overall learner goals for general education courses
and specific learner goals within each general education
area designation (A-analytical and quantitative
thought,
H-humanities, I-Contemporary International Cultures,
S-social and behavioral sciences, N-natural sciences,
and L - scientific investigation). The Criteria
and Goals document is the basis for 'review
and approval of general education courses' and
is the primary focus of general eduation assessment.
The
following are the primary learner goals for general
education. General education courses must identify
one or more of these as learner goals in the course:
| 1.
Students will communicate original thought in
written composition, speech, and graphic representations. |
| 2.
Students will identify, evaluate critically, and
seek solutions to complex problems. |
| 3.
Students will use the tools of mathematics and
physical or biological sciences to solve problems
and interpret the results. |
| 4.
Students will have knowledge of the relationship
between historic and contemporary issues and will
understand contemporary issues with sensitivity
to a rapidly changing, diverse, and complex world. |
| 5.
Students will have an understanding of the beliefs
that guide human actions and their consequences. |
| 6.
Students will have an understanding of how the
content knowledge from general education courses
applies to the practice of their discipline and
to other disciplines, to society, and to their
own lives. |
