Oklahoma State University Assessment Council Mission Statement

The Assessment Council provides leadership for assessment efforts on campus.

  • Setting explicit student learning goals or outcomes for an academic program
  • Evaluating the extent to which students are reaching those goals
  • Using the information for program development and improvement

Vision

Improve students’ educational experiences through an effective and nationally-recognized university assessment program that is viewed by faculty and administration as integral to the institution’s educational operations.

Goals

    1. Fully engage all academic programs and student services in systematic evaluation of outcomes.

    a. Encourage all degree programs to provide assessment plans and reports.
    b. Increase level of engagement in assessment activities for those programs and services with less effective assessment plans.
    c. Encourage assessment of student services as well as academic programs.

    2. Facilitate the development and implementation of effective assessments aimed at continuous improvement of student learning, including assessment of student perceptions and academic readiness.

    a. Through the outcomes assessment review process, assist with development of effective plans that will provide information to be used for making improvements in academic programs.
    b. Continue development of the program for assessment of the general education curriculum.

    3. Advocate for implementation of recommendations based on assessment results that will enrich the students’ experience.

    a. Through the outcomes assessment review process, and through allocation of funding resources, encourage the implementation of changes in academic programs and student services based on assessment results.

    4. Provide stewardship of students’ assessment fees.

    a. Ensure use of student assessment fees in accordance with guidelines set by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and the OSU Assessment Plan.
    b. Carefully and responsibly consider allocation of funds to achieve the most useful results for the benefit of students’ educational experiences.

    5. Collaborate with academic programs and student services to establish practices that meet or exceed assessment requirements of coordinating, governing and accrediting bodies.

    6. Increase faculty involvement in assessment and engagement in the scholarship of assessment.

    a. Support consultation, workshops, and professional development for faculty in the area of assessment of student learning.
    b. Communicate regularly with the campus community about assessment activities and their results.
    c. Participate in professional development opportunities, and encourage and support council members and faculty in scholarly activity in the area of assessment.

    7. Make assessment a more integral part of the institution’s educational operations.

    a. Inform faculty and administrators about the assessment program and promote consideration of assessment results in their decision-making processes. Document changes made based on assessment results.
    b. Encourage administration to provide resources to enhance assessment practices and improve faculty’s use of assessment results
    c. Promote linkage of assessment outcomes to allocation of resources for the improvement of student learning.
    d. Inform students about the assessment program and how it is used to improve their educational experiences.
    e. Integrate assessment with other university processes (such as Academic Program Review).
