Methods
The
survey was developed by the National Survey of Student Engagement
project staff at the Indiana University Center for Postsecondary
Research & Planning. The
questionnaire, called The College Student Report, was mailed
to 1,500 randomly selected OSU first-year students and seniors
during spring semester 2000. Students could complete the survey
that was mailed to them and return it via U.S. mail to the
NSSE coordinators, or they could complete the questionnaire
online.
Survey questions were assigned to a cluster of similar activities
to develop five national benchmarks of effective educational
practice. The benchmarks were: (1) Level of academic challenge,
(2) Active and collaborative learning, (3) Student interactions
with faculty members, (4) Enriching educational experiences,
and (5) Supportive campus environment.
The responses of OSU students (n=516) were compared with
the responses of 13,000 randomly selected students from
41 other Research I & II institutions (the list of peer
institutions is given in Appendix
I).
Response Rates:
A total of 516 OSU first-year students (n=257) and seniors
(n=259) completed the survey, for a response rate of 34%.
The demographics of the OSU survey population are shown
