CLEP - College-Level Examination Program

The CLEP exam can help you save both money and time by allowing you to testout of freshman- and sophomore-level courses in which you feel you already know the material. Unlike Advanced Placement, the CLEP is not built around a curriculum, but is designed to test a student’s knowledge of college-level subjects regardless of where they may have gained that knowledge. Students satisfying minimum scores indicated will earn the equivalent course(s) listed in the table below. OSU does not charge any tuition or fees for credit earned through examination. The only expense to the student is the actual cost of the exam.

OSU offers the following CLEP exams:

Freshman College Composition

OSU requires a computer-based E-Write essay component in addition to the multiple-choice CLEP exam. Students testing on the OSU campus will receive the results of their CLEP on the same day it is administered. We strongly encourage you to take this exam at the OSU Testing Center; however, if you are unable to do so, please contact our office for information regarding the possibility of taking the E-Write essay component on the Web at another testing center.

History Exams

OSU requires an essay component for the CLEP History exams in addition to the multiple-choice section. This essay component is available only at the OSU testing center; therefore, students interested in obtaining credit in History should not test at any other testing center. The CLEP test score report reflects a numerical score for the multiple-choice portion only. Students are advised to disregard the test score report and wait for official notification from OSU of the final results, which include scoring of the essay component.

Pricing and Scheduling
The cost of the exam varies depending on the type of exam you are taking, and involves a fee that you must pay to OSU and another which is paid to CLEP, broken down as:

OSU
CLEP

$70
$100
Exam w/o Essay

The two fees must be paid separately. For the OSU portion you may use cash, check, money order, or charge to your bursar’s account. For the CLEP fee you may use only a credit card or money order.

Academic Regulations Pertaining to Credit by Exam

  • Credit earned by examination will not be placed on a student’s transcript until they have successfully completed 12 or more semester credit hours of academic work at OSU
  • Credit will be recorded with a neutral grade of “P” (Pass) if the student earns the equivalent of a “C” or better on the examination. No grade is recorded if the student fails the exam
  • The amount of credit which may be applied to a degree program is subject only to meeting the residence credit requirements of OSU
  • A native speaker of a foreign language (one whose high school level instruction was conducted principally in that language) cannot earn credit toward graduation in lower-division (1000-2000 level) courses in that language. Under certain circumstances this policy may be waived. Students should contact the dean of their college for further information
  • The student must need the course to meet some requirement for a certificate or degree being pursued at OSU
