Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP) – Fall 2019
Students for whom English is not their native language and who submit a PBT (paper-based test) version of the TOEFL, or who take the IELTS, must take the Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP) upon arrival at OSU and comply with the provisions associated with that test. The TELP is administered on the Stillwater campus at the OSU Testing Center and on the Tulsa campus at the Learning Services Center before each regular semester. A waiver of the TELP requirement will be granted to a student who has achieved:
1. a score of 600 PBT or higher on the TOEFL and a score of 5.0 or higher on the Test of Written English (TWE) or Essay; or
2. an IELTS, academic stream, overall band score of 6.5 or higher on each of the band scores for Listening, Reading and Writing.
About the TELP Examination: The Test of English Language Proficiency (TELP) is a test of written English and assesses the academic English skills necessary for students to function well in graduate-level university classes. The test has two sections: Listening/Dictation and Reading/Writing. The maximum score on each subtest is 100 points. Each section is discussed below.
TELP Scoring: Students who score 70 or greater on both the Listening/Dictation and Reading/Writing portions of the TELP are not required by OSU policy to enroll in either ENGL 0003 or ENGL 4893*.
Students who score less than 70 on the Listening/Dictation portion of the TELP (irrespective of the score on the reading/writing portion) are required by OSU policy to enroll in ENGL 0003 during their first semester of graduate studies at OSU. ENGL 0003 carries a grade of satisfactory/unsatisfactory and may not be used toward minimum degree requirements. Students must enroll in ENGL 0003 each semester until a satisfactory grade is earned.
Students who score at least 70 on the Listening/Dictation portion of the TELP, but less than 70 on the Reading/Writing portion are required by OSU policy to enroll in ENGL 4893* early in the degree program and no later than the end of the third semester. ENGL 4893* carries graduate credit and may be used toward minimum degree requirements; a grade of B or better in this course is required. Both ENGL 0003 and ENGL 4893*, as applicable, must be listed on the student's Plan of Study.
Students who score less than 70 on both Listening/Dictation and Reading/Writing portions of the TELP are required by OSU policy to enroll in ENGL 0003 during their first semester of graduate studies at OSU and are encouraged to enroll in ENGL 4893* no later than the end of the third semester.
Students who are required to take ENGL 0003 and/or ENGL 4893*: these courses must be listed on your Plan of Study.
Registering for the TELP
The TELP is available on both the Stillwater and Tulsa campuses. When you arrive on either campus, you will need to register to take the TELP. Testers must cover the $50 cost of the test registration, payable on the date of the exam at the OSU Testing Center (Stillwater) or at the time of registration at the Learning Services Center (Tulsa).
Registration and Administration - Stillwater Campus:
Testers must register for the TELP exam by Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 8:30am to take the exam at the OSU Testing Center (100 UAT Building) on the OSU-Stillwater campus. To register, visit the OSU Testing Center website at http://testing.okstate.edu/ and click on the "Scheduling a Test" link. On the test date, it is mandatory to present your passport, CWID number, and the registration fee. The registration fee of $50 must be paid by personal check, credit card, or charged to a bursar account. Students paying by bursar must bring an active student ID card. It is recommended students bring a credit card, as new ID cards may not be active until the semester begins, and students cannot test without payment.
The TELP exam will be given on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at the OSU Testing Center (100 UAT Building) at 9:00 am. The test results should be known on Friday, August 16, 2019 and will be available at the Graduate College in 202 Whitehurst starting at 1:30PM. Bring a photo ID (such as your passport or student ID card) to pick-up your results.
Registration and Administration - Tulsa Campus:
Testers must register for the TELP exam by Tuesday, August 13, 2019 at 3:00 pm at the Learning Services Center, 2302 Main Hall or by calling the OSU-Tulsa Learning Services Center at 918-594-8232. The registration fee of $50 can be paid by credit card or they will charge the registration fee to a bursar account.
The TELP exam will be given on Wednesday, August 14, 2019at 9:00 am. Go to the Learning Services Center in 2302 Main Hall to check in, and you will be directed to the testing room at that time. The test results should be known on Friday, August 16, 2019 and will be handed out in the afternoon at the Learning Services Center, 2302 Main Hall.
The TELP has two sections: a listening/dictation subtest and a reading-writing subtest.
Part 1: Listening/Dictation Subtest
The Listening/Dictation Subtest requires students to listen to a tape-recorded passage on an academic topic and to write word-for-word what the speaker says. The student will have 20 minutes to complete this section.
Responses will be graded on the ability to write down correctly the content of the passage. Students need to listen carefully and write the exact words in the specific grammatical forms in which they are spoken.
Part 2: Reading/Writing Subtest
The Reading/Writing Subtest requires the student to read two passages and write a brief summary of specific parts of each passage. Students will have 50 minutes to complete this task.
The passages discuss different academic topics and are written in the style of an academic publication. Each passage is approximately 600 to 650 words in length and may include a related table or figure. The task is to read each passage and then write a summary of the specific parts of the passage relevant to the question that follows it. In order to complete the task efficiently, students should follow these steps:
1. Read the passage.
2. Read the question following the passage.
3. Read the passage again, focusing on the parts relevant to the question.
4. Write the summary, focusing on the most important information.
The summary should address the question specifically and not include information from the passage that is not related to the question.
